There are those who aspire to a profession, and then there are those who actually wind up getting sucked into it! Such is the case with that most bemoaned of professions today, the legal one. The newspapers are full of articles about former students who have been long unemployed finally putting their legal skills to good use: suing their alma maters for false advertising and fraud!
Now that’s a novel idea for today’s modern online CPE courses: how to get your money back after an education that leads nowhere. Unfortunately, the professionals most interested in such courses would likely have abandoned their professions and so have no occasion to take such a course! In any case, this much is clear: being an attorney is no longer the nicely buttered bread of toast it was once reputed to have been. Indeed, it’s not even toast these days, to hear these lawsuits tell it; it’s barely breadcrumbs.
Far from taking online CPE courses in order to maintain their professional standings, law graduates who have become embittered find themselves not utilizing their expensively acquired skills, whether employed or even underemployed. The papers are rife these days with complaints from bartenders and baristas who have law degrees. Far from overbilling clients at hundreds of dollars an hour for routine services that a paralegal can do in minutes, the swindled grads are now fighting back in the way they’ve been best trained: resorting to the courts.
Interestingly, they may at least earn some money authoring those online CPE courses! That’s no joke; it takes someone with a certain level of knowledge, after all, if not expertise and experience to create instructional material that is informative. It’s certainly better than swinging shots for the happy hour crowd of peers who’ve lucked into other more lucrative fields!
